Measuring Speed with Multi-Pole Magnet Tape
By attaching a multi-pole magnet tape to a target, speed can be measured with Digital Hall Effect latching speed sensors.
When mounted in front of a piece of alternating pole magnetic tape, the sensor output will turn on when over the South Pole and off when over the North Pole, resulting in a square wave output with a 50% duty cycle.
Quadrature and Speed/Direction Hall Latch sensors provide a second output for resolving the direction of motion.
4 pole per inch magnetic tape is available in our Accessory Catalog.
Check our Application Notes for more on how Hall Effect sensors work and solutions for measuring speed with multiple types of sensors.
