Reed switches are magnetic sensors that function as a normally open or closed relay dependent on the presence or absence of a magnetic field. They are low cost, passive sensors that do not consume any electricity.
These sensors are mechanical switches and the amount of power they can switch is dependent on the size of the switch. Increasing the voltage or current passing through the reed switch will decrease the switch life.
Reed switch sensors are commonly used in applications such as door and window alarms, proximity sensors, and safety switches.
For solid state alternatives to Reed Switches, Hall Effect Switches are available with normally-open or normally-closed outputs.
Contact our Applications Engineers to discuss if a Reed Switch or Hall Switch is best suited to your specific application.
