Magnetic Fields decrease in size exponentially as the gap from the surface of the magnet increases. When using an Analog Hall Effect sensor it is important to select one with an appropriate gain and offset to provide an output resolution that is appropriate to the application.
Analog Hall Effect Sensors are pole sensitive. Sensors are available with centered outputs for detecting fields from both poles or with programmable offsets for detecting fields from a single pole.
